Operators who work in a higher risk environment e.g. steel work or overhead confined spaces would benefit from taking the IPAF PAL+ course. Getting the added ‘+’ on your PAL card will prove that you can demonstrate your ability of operating powered access in a challenging environment.
The IPAF PAL+ training course is an optional, addition, one day of category specific training designed for operators working in high risk and challenging environments e.g. working on challenging terrain, steel work or overhead confined spaces. The PAL+ course is open to any operator who currently holds a valid IPAF card in the relevant category. The course will increase your ability at a practical level and give you a greater understanding of why accidents happen and how to prevent them.
The IPAF PAL+ course consists of both theory and practical instruction which includes:
- Understanding limitations of machine application
- Procedure and identification of specific site hazards
- Procedure and benefits of full function testing
- Requirement, procedure and benefits of pre-operational inspection
- Identification and understanding of operational hazards
- Understand and apply correct starting procedure
- Identify proximity of all hazards both overhead and others
- Travel machine with platform in correct position
- Correctly position machine in relation to the task
- Deploy stabilisers and level machine
- Stow tools/equipment safely on platform
- Use safety harness
- Raise and lower platform correctly
- Slew and travel correctly
- Mount and dismount the machine correctly
At the end of the IPAF PAL+ theory session, you will take a short test which, after successfully completing, will allow you to take the practical session in the afternoon. This will be followed by a practical assessment. After successful completion you will receive a new PAL card showing the relevant categories for which PAL+ was received.
Candidates are required to being suitable PPE with them on this course:
- Safety harness
- Hard hat
- Steel capped boots
- High visibility vest
- Safety gloves
Operators who currently have an IPAF qualification in the relevant category may take the IPAF PAL+ course.

Who is the Accrediting Body?
IPAF – International Powered Access Federation.
IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) is a non profit organisation dedicated to promoting the safe and effective use of powered access worldwide.
What is a PAL card?
IPAF’s PAL Card (Powered Access License) is the proof provided to all persons who successfully complete training and testing on an IPAF machine-based course.
How do I a category to my IPAF Card?
If operators want to add a category to their PAL Card, they need to successfully complete the IPAF approved Theory Test Paper. In addition to this, they must achieve the required standard when operating each of the machine categories that they wish to add on to their PAL Card.
If demonstrators want to add a category to their PAL Card, they must do the operator theory test and practical test on that category, then do the demonstrator course
Can IPAF training be done on site?
Yes, provided that there are suitable facilities and equipment. Please discuss with the TrainingPlus team if this is required – 0845 8723411 or email@example.com
Who keeps the card + certificate?
IPAF suggests that the operator should have the issued card on his/her person at all times when working with MEWPs and the employer should keep the certificate.
