If you passed a car test on or after 1st January 1997 you’re limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass towing a trailer up to 750kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM proving the MAM of the trailer doesn’t exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. You will need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weight limits.
Course Summary
The Trailer Training course (B+E) allows vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM to be combined with trailers in excess of 750kgs MAM. In order to gain this entitlement, new category B driving licence holders have to pass a further practical test for B+E. (there is no Theory Test).
You can take your test in either a Manual or Automatic transmission vehicle. If you pass using an Automatic then you are entitle to tow using only an Automatic transmission. If you pass using a Manual transmission vehicle then you are entitle to tow either manual or automatic vehicles.
- You will be taught how to do the “S” manoeuvre.
- The DSA method of reversing.
- All safety checks you will be required to know for the test.
- Carry out lighting checks.
Every B+E test takes approximately 1 hour and 30 mins to complete. B+E tests are only conducted at HGV (bus and lorry) driving test centres. At the start of the test you will be required to read a number plate to check your eyesight. You will then be asked a number of questions about the safety of your vehicle and trailer. Then you have to complete a reverse manoeuvre. The road drive will include a 10 minute independent driving session. Upon return to the test centre you will need to demonstrate the uncoupling and re-coupling procedure. Do not under-estimate the standard of driving that you will need to acheive to be successful in the test. The majority of drivers that fail the B+E test do so because their road driving skills do not meet the required standard. If you make mistakes on the test, the crucial issue is not to worry, the mistake might be less serious and may not affect your result. The examiner is looking for an overall safe standard of driving.
No equipment is required for this course.
Candidates must hold a driving licence.
