This course is for managers, supervisors or other persons who will have responsibilities for personnel working in confined spaces. It will give them the background knowledge to be able to supervise or manage such operations and to ensure that personnel involved have appropriate levels of training. It will help them to appreciate the hazards and risks of confined space working and to ensure that the appropriate resources are available and being correctly used.
Course Summary
Accidents in confined spaces result in a number of fatalities every year in the workplace. The Confined Space Regulations 1997 requires all duty holders to ensure that all work in Confined Spaces is carried out in accordance with these Regulations. The employer is responsible for ensuring that a Safe System of Work is used if entry to a Confined Space cannot be avoided. All persons involved in Confined Space must be competent to do so and properly supervised as appropriate.
The Confined Space Management Awareness course consists of:
- Legislation and Regulations
- Definition of a confined space & Water UK NC1-NC4 classifications
- Specified risks
- Duties under the Regulations, preventing the need for entry
- Hazard identification
- Atmospheric hazards and gases
- Principles and use of gas detectors
- Risk assessment
- Safe systems of work & permits to work
- Roles, responsibilities and topman duties
- Fall protection, rescue and escape breathing apparatus
Candidates will receive a confined spaces certificate.
Candidates participating in the course are required to bring any materials used by their own employer and copies of risk assessments or permits to work, so that they can see how their materials fit in to the context of the awareness of confined spaces training.
Knowledge of working within confined spaces is required.

Am I going to feel safe during my course participation?
Beside the fact that our staff and the environment of the school will make you feel happy and safe, CCTV is operating in most of the school’s areas.
I’m getting on a bit, is it like going back to school and will I feel out of place?
Not at all. A large percentage of our learners are mature students simply keeping up to date with current standards. Everybody is made to feel welcome in the centre.
Do I need to be clean shaven for a Breathing Apparatus exercise?
To get a good seal around the face it is recommended that delegates who use full working on set breathing apparatus or similar masks are clean shaven. We do not insist on being clean shaven as you will be training with no real risk, however, your employer or supervisor may insist on you being clean shaven.
How is this training delivered?
The theoretical aspect of the course is delivered in the classroom, involving exercises to identify confined spaces, protect workers and deal with emergency situations.
