Course Summary

The confined space (medium risk) is to provide personnel who work in confined spaces with the awareness of a safe working environment. Delegates are required to do a refresher course every three years.

A Confined Space is any space in a vessel, chamber, tank, silo, pit or any other sided space that is partially or fully enclosed (not always completely) that could contain a forseeable risk of serious injury. A risk being: Explosion or fire, gas/vapour or lack of oxygen that could cause unconsciousness, increase of body temperature or unconsciousness, increased level of fluid causing drowning or free flowing solids that could cause asphyxiation.

The confined space training course consists of both theory and practical instruction including:

  •     Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA)
  •     Provision and Safe Use of Work Equipment (PUWER)
  •     Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER)
  •     Confined Space Regulations
  •     Other current legislation
  •     Codes of Practice
  •     Hazards and Risks
  •     Communication
  •     Gas detection equipment – inspection and use
  •     Fire prevention
  •     Confined space entry procedures
  •     Inspection and use of access equipment
  •     Personal protective equipment (PPE) use, storage and hygiene
  •     Escape sets, inspections and use

 

You will take a short theory and practical test which, after successful completion will entitle you to a Certificate of Completion.

Who is it for?

Personnel involved in supervising, planning or execution of work resulting in entry to confined spaces are recommended to take this course.

You will need

Delegates are required to provide appropriate PPE for this course, including:

  • Hard hat
  • High visibility vest
  • Steel capped boot
  • Safety gloves

 

Your skill level

Delegates should have some confined space appreciation or awareness (perhaps attended a confined space planning meeting or been involved in some surface operation) – no previous qualification is required.

FAQs

Do I need to be clean shaven for a Breathing Apparatus exercise?

To get a good seal around the face it is recommended that delegates who use full working set breathing apparatus or similiar masks are clean shaven.  We do not insist on being clean shaven as you will be training with no real risk, however, your employer or supervisor may insist on you being clean shaven.

Are there any car parking spaces available?

Yes, there are a lot of FREE car parking spaces available in the area.

What accommodation is available?

There are a variety of hotels and B & B’s in the area. There is a list available to assist you with booking your stay.

Am I going to feel safe during my course participation?

Beside the fact that our staff and the environment of the school will make you feel happy and safe, CCTV is operating in most of the school’s areas.

I’m getting on a bit, is it like going back to school and will I feel out of place?

Not at all. A large percentage of our learners are mature students simply keeping up to date with current standards. Everybody is made to feel welcome in the centre.
