Course Summary

To provide delegates with a sound understanding of NRSWA Unit 7, which is the reinstatement of Hot-Lay Bituminous Materials. And to comply with the mandatory requirements of the New Roads and Streetworks Act 1991.

Course Objectives:

To provide delegates with the skills and knowledge to perform operative duties to the City & Guilds standards set in line with the NRSW Act 1991.

Delegates will be required to take theory based assessments along with a practical assessment which will involve being observed on the job.

This course covers:

  • The use of materials including HRA, PCSMs, close graded mixtures, dense surface course and porous surfacing materials
  • Bitumen binders and equivalence
  • Penetration values
  • Skid resistance
  • Polished stone values
  • Laying procedures
  • Delivery and rolling temperatures
  • Compaction requirements
  • Reinstatement profiles
  • Intervention limits
  • COSHH
  • PPE
  • Safe working practices.

NRSWA training courses are mainly practical, but you will have some written work. Successful completion of the NRSWA Course results in you gaining a NRSWA Certificate and Streetworks Card, detailing your units of competence and this is valid for 5 years.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for those who are already employed in the highways maintenance and utilities sector who require the skills to carry out excavation and reinstatement work (operatives) or who monitor the work of operatives (supervisors).

Operatives who carry out reinstatement of Hot-Lay Bituminous Materials and who already have units 1, 2 & 6 as minimum.

I’m getting on a bit, is it like going back to school and will I feel out of place?

Not at all. A large percentage of our learners are mature students simply keeping up to date with current standards. Everybody is made to feel welcome in the centre.
