Course Summary

This course will give you foundation training and assessment in operating a Wheeled Loading Shovel through a combination of classroom based tutorials and practical instruction.

Course content is as follows:

  • Undertake all pre-start, running checks and shut down procedures, mount and dismount
  • Explain precautions to be taken for underground and overhead services and other hazards
  • Prepare and configure the wheeled loading shovel for site and road travel
  • Place the machine in an out of service condition
  • Carry out excavations from an embankment of different materials and form stockpiles and ramps
  • Ensure load integrity and security
  • Explain loading/unloading procedures for machine transportation

Upon successful completion of the course you will be awarded:

CPCS Red Trained Operator Card (on successful completion of the CPCS Technical Tests).
CITB National Construction College certificate.

Who is it for?

This Course is suitable if you have received no formal instruction. If you already have experience operating a Wheeled Loading Shovel we offer a short duration course offer a short duration coursed to refresh and update.

You will need

Before taking the course you must:

  • You must have passed a CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test no more than two years before attending this course.
  • You must have a good understanding of spoken and written English.

Your skill level

On successful completion of the CPCS Technical Tests, you will be eligible to apply for a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card. You will also receive a CITB National Construction College certificate.

What are the benefits of a CSCS card?

CSCS is the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry.

CSCS cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out.

The Scheme keeps a database of people working in construction who have achieved, or are committed to achieving a recognised construction related qualification.

Most principal contractors and major house builders require construction workers on their sites to hold a valid CSCS card.

What do I need to apply for my card?

The majority of CSCS cards require a construction related qualification as well as a Health Safety & Environment Test passed within the previous 2 years.

When sending information by email to the CSCS always include:

The registration number (if known)
First and last name
Date of Brith or National Insurance Number

To apply for a CSCS card you need to prove you have the training and qualifications required to carry out your job. The type of work you do and your qualifications or membership of professional bodies will determine which type of CSCS card you should apply for.

What should I do if I suspect somebody is using a fraudulent card?

Retain the card if possible
Make photocopies of front and back
Record cardholder’s name and address
Ask the cardholder where the card was obtained from
Call the local police and report the matter
Refuse access to site (subject to company rules)
Forward copies of all evidence to Operations Team; CSCS Ltd, The Building Centre, 26 Store Street, London WC1E 7BT marked ‘SUSPECTED FRAUDULENT CARD’ with details of the crime number given by local police.

Do I need to pay for my training before I do it?

Can you cater for students with special needs?

Yes, but as with all special requirements that differ from the norm, please make us aware of your requirements and we will do our best to provide the appropriate support.

Yes, there are a lot of FREE car parking spaces available in the area.

What accommodation is available?

There are a variety of hotels and B & B’s in the area. There is a list available to assist you with booking your stay.

Am I going to feel safe during my course participation?

Beside the fact that our staff and the environment of the school will make you feel happy and safe, CCTV is operating in most of the school’s areas.

I’m getting on a bit, is it like going back to school and will I feel out of place?

Not at all. A large percentage of our learners are mature students simply keeping up to date with current standards. Everybody is made to feel welcome in the centre.
