All renewals must be done prior to the expiry date, otherwise an operator will have to do a full Operator course and a Demonstrator will have to do a full Operator and Demonstrator course again.
Course Summary
The IPAF Renewal Course is only for Operators and Demonstrators who have been filling out their log books (60 entries over 5 years, 10 of which should be in the final year prior to expiry) will be eligible for a renewal test.
The IPAF Renewal Course requires the following:-
- Operators
In order to renew or upgrade a licence, an Operator must successfully complete the IPAF approved Theory Test Paper. In addition to this, an Operator must achieve the required standard when operating each of the machine categories for which licence renewal or upgrade is required. In this instance, it is permitted to hold 12 practical tests in one day. Only Operators who have been filling out their log books (over five years the log book should be i.e. half full, 60 entries) will be eligible for a renewal test. All renewals must be done before the expiry date. If the Operator licence has expired the Operator will have to do the full Operator course.
- Demonstrators
In order to renew a licence, a Demonstrator must successfully complete the IPAF Operator theory and practical and the Demonstrator Theory Test Paper (3.3.1). In addition to this, a Demonstrator must successfully complete the Demonstrators practical test in regards to each of the machine categories for which licence renewal is required. A Demonstrator, renewing prior to their licence expiry must produce a filled log book (over 5 years should be i.e. half full, 60 entries) to be able to do Demonstrator theory and practical only. All renewals must be done before the expiry date or the Demonstrator must do the full Operational and Demonstrator courses. If a Demonstrator wants to add a category they must do the operator theory test and practical test on that category then do the Demonstrator course.
After successful completion you will receive a new PAL card showing the relevant categories.
Candidates are required to bring suitable PPE with them on this course:
- Safety harness
- Hard hat
- Steel capped boots
- High visibility vest
- Safety gloves
Operators and Demonstrators who currently have an IPAF theory qualification in the relevant category may take the IPAF Renewal Course.

What is a PAL card?
IPAF’s PAL Card (Powered Access License) is the proof provided to all persons who successfully complete training and testing on an IPAF machine-based course.
How do I a category to my IPAF Card?
If operators want to add a category to their PAL Card, they need to successfully complete the IPAF approved Theory Test Paper. In addition to this, they must achieve the required standard when operating each of the machine categories that they wish to add on to their PAL Card.
