SMSTS vs SSSTS: What’s the Difference?
- SMSTS: Designed for site managers, project managers, and senior construction professionals responsible for overseeing large sites and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. It’s suitable for individuals managing multiple teams or projects.
- SSSTS: Aimed at site supervisors, foremen, and those in supervisory roles who are responsible for ensuring site safety on a day-to-day basis. It’s ideal for those with direct oversight of smaller teams or sections of a project.
- SMSTS: A more extensive course, the SMSTS training lasts 5 days.
- SSSTS: The SSSTS course is shorter, lasting 2 days.

At the end of the SMSTS training course, you will take a short theory test. Upon successful completion of the SMSTS course, you will receive an industry recognised CITB certificate which is valid for five years. Established in 1974, the Construction Industry Training Board is the Training Board for the construction trade in the UK.
No PPE is required for the SMSTS training course.
There are no formal qualifications required in order to attend the SMSTS course although experience within construction would be recommended.

How long is the SMSTS certification valid?
The SMSTS certification is valid for 5 years. After this period, you will need to take a refresher course to maintain your qualification.

My ticket is due to expire, how long do I have to renew it?
An SMSTS refresher course must be taken before your current ticket expires.
Is the SMSTS course recognised by the HSE?
Yes, the SMSTS training course is an accredited course which, after successful completion, will entitle you to an industry recognised CITB (Council and Industry Training) Certificate.
I’m getting on a bit, is it like going back to school and will I feel out of place?
Not at all. A large percentage of our learners are mature students simply keeping up to date with current standards. Everybody is made to feel welcome in the centre.
When do I receive my certificate after I pass?
Certificates are issued by CITB (Construction Industry Training Board / Construction Skills). It can take between 4 & 8 weeks for the certificate to arrive. Certificates are emailed digitally.
